LEARN TO MAKE A

Mesolithic Prayer Basket

2-Hour LIVE Online Workshop

Twine a prayer vessel rooted in some of humanity's oldest weaving methods

Wednesday, 6th May
11am PDT / 2pm EDT / 7pm BST

Stone, fibre, intention.

An ancient act of making whole, remembered by living hands.

The Medicine of Making

Join artist & ceremonialist Ruth Dillon to create a ritual vessel for holding your prayers using one of the oldest weaving techniques known to humanity.

Basketry is an ancient and universal craft, with techniques and materials passed down through generations. It’s believed to predate both pottery and weaving. During this workshop you will learn how to make a mesolithic twined basket, then we will join in ceremony as we place and seal our prayers within.

In an age of ever-increasing artificial intelligence and automation, making something with your hands is a radical act of remembering that reconnects us to our inherent wholeness.

ARTIST & WEAVER

Ruth Dillon

Ruth Dillon is an interdisciplinary artist based in Norfolk in the UK. Her work is a dialogue with the land exploring craft, materials and the wisdom and medicine held in ecotone landscapes. Her practice explores the representation of marginalised voices, both human and non-human. Working with local clay, reed, willow, flax, fibres and fleece. Making work and holding spaces that offer a liminal meeting place, to explore landscape, ancient technology, modernity and material culture.

HOSTESS, WEAVING REMEMBRANCE

Hanna Leigh

Hanna Leigh is a Singer-Songwriter, Voice Doula, Weaver, and Devotee of this precious, living Earth. She was raised in California (Chumash territory) though in recent years has spent extensive time residing on ancestral lands in the Celtic isles. Frequently Asked Questions

For this workshop, you will need:

  • Scissors (sharp enough to cut the materials)
  • 2 x contrasting coloured weaving materials, these could be jute twine or raffia but choose a contrast so you can more easily see what you are doing as you work.
  • Cut 16 x 30cm (~6.3×11.8 in) long pieces of jute twine, tied at the centre point, this will form the spokes of our baskets.
  • Approx 15-20 metres (~50-65 ft) of the contrasting colour. A ball of twine of bundle of raffia will be plenty.
  • A needle with an eye large enough to take your jute twine.

Upon registration, you will receive access to a 12-minute introductory video, providing more details on our materials list.

This offering is happening online through Zoom, with teachers joining us from different countires.

You’ll have lifetime access to the recording (or membership-duration access if you choose a membership plan)
