Margaret Stewart Scottish Gaelic Singer

Margaret Stewart

Margaret Stewart (Maighread Stiùbhart) is a renowned Gaelic singer and folklorist from the Isle-of-Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. She is a native Gaelic speaker who has been steeped in the history, culture and songs of her homeland. She has won a number of awards for her singing, such as the National Mod Gold Medal and Traditional Singer of the Year at the Trad Music Awards. In 2020 she was inducted into the Traditional Music Hall of Fame.

As well as her musical performances, over the last 30 years, in collaboration with some of the cream of Highland and Irish musicians, Margaret is also in demand as a mentor, teacher and lecturer on many themes of Gaelic song and related history. She has amassed an impressive repertoire and has given many live performances and online songs courses both at home and abroad. When she is not performing she enjoys teaching younger singers, and her local Gaelic choir, on how best to perform Gaelic song; driving home the importance of giving the text priority over the melody, letting the natural rhythms of the language steer the song and ensuring that accompaniment does not drown out the words and their meaning.

Margaret has recorded three albums, on the Greentrax label, to date and is currently undertaking a PhD research project focusing on pastoral transhumance on the north Lewis moors.
