Rita O'Loughlin

Rita O’Loughlin is passionate about Irish heritage and local communities. Originally from Dublin, she moved to Portarlington, Co. Laois, 20 years ago, calling it “a small town with a huge heart.”

With support from the Port Art Collective, Rita founded the award-winning @mybratbhride, inspired by the Brat Bhride tradition passed down from her mother. Together, they upcycled scarves into Brigid healing shawls, a practice once common in rural Ireland.

After her mother’s passing, Rita launched a voluntary initiative to teach people of all ages how to create their own brat bhride from preloved scarves. The project has thrived, promoting the tradition in schools, women’s sheds, rehab centers, libraries, and festivals across Ireland.
